چکیده

The data reported by Baddeley and Scott (1971) is usually interpreted as showing forgetting in short-term memory in the absence of interference. Given the absence of interference, the cause must be decay. SIMPLE (Brown, Neath, & Chater, 2007), a local distinctiveness model of memory, was able to fit the data quite well with no difference in the parameters for the 3, 5, and 7 item lists (R = 0.937). Given that the only difference in the three conditions is the number of items in the list and the relative temporal distinctiveness, this account attributes forgetting in the absence of proactive interference to intra-sequence interference.

Arguments Against Memory Trace Decay: A SIMPLE Account of Baddeley and Scott

They concluded that interference, rather than trace decay, was responsible for forgetting over the short-term. Consistent with the interference view, performance decreased over trials. Baddeley and Scott (1971), however, suggested that the Keppel and Underwood (1962) data suffered from ceiling effects which might have masked forgetting. They therefore addressed first trial forgetting when ceili...

Children's Working Memory Measurement Model: Testing of Hich and Baddeley Model, Baddeley and Cowan Model

The aim of the present study was to investigate Children's Working Memory Measurement Model: Testing Theories’ Hich and Baddeley, Baddeley and Cowan. The research design was correlational. The population included all primary school students in Tehran in 1400. Participants were 150 students aged 7 to 10 years who were selected by convenience sampling method. They all responded to the Comprehensi...

Development of working memory: should the Pascual-Leone and the Baddeley and Hitch models be merged?

The data presented by Kemps, De Rammelaere, and Desmet (2000, this issue) appear to have some aspects that fit most readily into our own model (Baddeley & Hitch, 1974), while others appear to support that of Pascual-Leone (1970). We accept that our initial model said little about development and was better able to account for relatively simple memory-based tasks than more complex cognitive acti...

Working memory and emotion: Detecting the hedonic detector

In an attempt to account for the impact of emotion on cognition, Baddeley (2007) proposed the existence of a hedonic detection system. Malfunctioning of this system was assumed to play a crucial role in depression. Exploring this hypothesis requires a simple and rapid way of assessing the neutral point of proposed hedonic detector. We describe two experiments that aim to develop such a method o...

The Psychology of Memory

In this chapter I will try to provide a brief overview of the concepts and techniques that are most widely used in the psychology of memory. Although it may not appear to be the case from sampling the literature, there is in fact a great deal of agreement as to what constitutes the psychology of memory, much of it developed through the interaction of the study of normal memory in the laboratory...
